SEO Tools: How Keyword & Rank-Tracking Limits Really Work — 2026

Every SEO suite advertises a price, but they meter you completely differently — per keyword, per day, even keywords multiplied by search engines. Understanding the limit model matters more than the headline price. A sourced look at 14 tools.

Two SEO tools at "2,000 keywords" can deliver very different capacity once you account for daily-vs-monthly limits, the keywords-times-engines multiplier, and overage charges. This page maps how each tool actually meters you in 2026 — plus the genuinely free and lifetime options.

Key findings

  1. The sneakiest limit is "keywords × search engines." SE Ranking counts capacity as keywords multiplied by engines tracked — so monitoring the same 2,000 keywords across 3 engines consumes ~6,000 of capacity. A headline keyword count can mean a third of what you assumed.
  2. Daily limits behave differently from monthly ones. Mangools and Ubersuggest cap searches per day (resetting next day) rather than per month. Great for steady daily research, frustrating for occasional bulk work — the opposite trade-off from a monthly pool.
  3. Lifetime and free options exist at the budget end. Ubersuggest sells a ~$290 lifetime license; Mangools has a permanent free plan; Screaming Frog is free up to 500 URLs per crawl. For bloggers and small sites, ongoing subscription isn't the only path.
  4. "Traffic data" is often estimated, not measured. SimilarWeb derives traffic from browser panels, ISP partnerships and modeling — accurate within ~10–20% only on large sites. Treat competitor traffic numbers as directional, not exact.
  5. Capacity-based pricing can beat seat-based for teams. AccuRanker prices purely on keyword capacity with unlimited seats and domains — cheaper for an agency tracking moderate keywords across many clients than per-seat rivals.

Methodology

14 SEO tools (suites, rank trackers and crawlers) compared on advertised entry price and the model by which they meter usage: tracked-keyword caps, daily vs monthly search limits, the keywords×engines multiplier, crawl-URL caps, and overage charges. Figures are as published in a sourced 2026 dataset. This is a limit-model map, not a data-quality ranking.

Editorial note (verification): SEO tool limits and pricing change often (SE Ranking restructured tiers in late 2025). Confirm current caps and the metering model on each vendor's pricing page before republishing. Compiled 2026-06-27.
