Who Owns Your Software? SaaS Consolidation & Ownership Map — 2026

The "independent" tool you chose may be one brand inside a conglomerate. This maps recent acquisitions, parent-company groupings, rebrands and shutdowns across consumer and B2B software in 2026 — because who owns a tool affects its privacy, pricing and roadmap.

Software consolidation is quiet but constant. A privacy VPN, an antivirus and a password manager can share one parent; three "competing" ATS products can be one company. Ownership matters: it shapes data policies, pricing changes and whether a product survives. This page compiles the ownership facts surfaced across our 2026 category studies.

Key findings

  1. Privacy tools are surprisingly concentrated. Kape owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and PIA; Gen Digital owns Norton, Avast and AVG (sharing one detection engine). If you diversify privacy/security tools for resilience, check the parent first — you may be buying three products from one company.
  2. 2025–2026 saw two nine-and-ten-figure deals reshape categories. Capital One's ~$5.15B acquisition of Brex (Apr 2026) and SAP's ~$1.8B purchase of SmartRecruiters (Sept 2025, which then discontinued its free tier) show fintech and HR consolidating into incumbents — often followed by pricing/free-tier changes.
  3. Recruiting (ATS) is a consolidation hotspot. Employ Inc. alone owns Lever, JazzHR and Jobvite; Recruitee is now Tellent; SmartRecruiters is SAP. Buyers comparing "different" ATS products are often comparing siblings.
  4. Rebrands break your bookmarks and your research. OpenPhone→Quo, ConvertKit→Kit, Sendinblue→Brevo, Acuity→Squarespace Scheduling — old reviews and comparisons reference names that no longer exist. Always check for a rebrand before trusting a dated article.
  5. An acquisition or shutdown is a buying signal. Freshteam (EOL Mar 2026) and Height (shut down Sept 2025) are dead ends; a fresh acquisition often precedes a free-tier cut (SmartRecruiters) or a pricing change. Factor ownership stability into a multi-year commitment.

Methodology

This map compiles ownership, acquisition, rebrand and shutdown facts surfaced across our sourced 2026 category studies (VPN/security, hosting, recruiting, fintech, email, scheduling, stock media and more). Deal values are reported figures from public announcements. This is a consolidation snapshot for buyer awareness, not investment or legal advice, and not an exhaustive M&A database.

Editorial note (verification): Ownership and deal details are public but evolve (deals close, brands change hands again). Confirm the current parent company and deal terms against primary sources (company press releases, regulatory filings) before republishing. Compiled 2026-06-27.
